Problem solving is a necessary part of the engineer’s professional life. With a large engineering organization and when dealing with complex technology, it becomes necessary to use a consistent methodology, “one language” to communicate effectively and efficiently throughout the duration of a technical problem. Tokyo Electron, therefore, chose to implement a standard problem-solving program.

After several years implementing this program, there was little evidence of any improvement in problem solving. This resulted in a senior manager inquiring as to the ROI of this program. Several conversations resulted in revising the program strategy of just simply offering classes to building the problem-solving methodology into the procedures of the organization. The strategic change also included assessing the program and the results the problem solving credited to the program.

Fast forward to today, the program is now thoroughly assessed, documenting a significant impact on several strategic goals: parts costs have reduced 23%, troubleshooting time has reduced 60%, and there are numerous stories of increased customer satisfaction due to implementation of this problem solving methodology.
