"Are you REALLY listening to me?" :
Rethinking What You Know About Communication Training & the Multi-Generational Workplace

NOTE: Register by June 17 to reserve a lunch.

Credit card users MUST pay in advance. If you are paying at the event, we can only take cash or check.

    Program Description:

Here's something you've probably heard (and said) countless times: "I hear you saying that <insert parroting back here>."

This is a common technique of "reflective" listening, which is frequently taught as a core listening competency...a key professional and interpersonal communication skill.

But there's a few problems with this particular technique, especially in the workplace:

    • Most people are pretty smart.
    • People generally KNOW what they just said.
    • At worst, it can become irritating - and a communication obstacle
So why do we persist in training people to use it? And why do we use it ourselves? The answers may lie in how our culture has shifted now that -- for the first time in our history -- there are FIVE different generations active in the workplace, with each hearing and responding selectively.

The so-called millennials also see (and HEAR!) right through outdated "techniques." Over-usage of traditional communication tools may not be as effective today as they were in the past.

Soooo...what can a skilled communicator, trainer, or coach do to keep up with the times? How can you boost your own listening skills, while helping to develop others?

Join us for a (very interactive) session focused on:

    • Listening "cultures," and how different generations have varying needs
    • 3 types of listening skills
    • Listening for "The Big 5" (critical for coaching and creating agreements)

Competencies for the Training & Development Profession:

    • Coaching
    • Training Delivery
    • Interpersonal Skills [Foundational]

    Training Field 101

Have you ever done a job search and wondered “What does that job title actually do?” and “How does that fit with training?”

Here’s your chance to get a look at job titles and functions that fall under the Workplace Learning and Development Professionals’ bailiwick.

If you are transitioning into the training field, or even just considering it, this presentation is designed for you. It will include how different functions support each other within the training field. Star plans to include information from National ASTD’s research into the Areas of Expertise. This information was used to develop the Certified Professional of Learning and Performance (CPLP) accreditation.

    About The Speaker
A co-worker once coined it best “You are a vast resource.” Jane "Star" Fisher offers more than 20 years of experience in the Learning and Development field. She has a M.S. in Instructional and Performance Technology and has earned and maintained the CPLP accreditation. She earned the unique recognition of “Exceptional CPLP Trainer” from the local ASTD chapter for providing years of facilitating CPLP study groups (each cohort is a 9-month program).

Star Fisher has been labeled the “Games Guru” so most likely any presentation she provides will be interactive, allowing the learners to help shape the program.

She is a Senior Associate with Caveo Learning, a learning consulting firm, providing learning solutions to Fortune 1000 and other leading organizations. She specializes in Instructional Design, and improving Caveo’s client’s development of their Learning and Development structure, systems, and personnel.

Differentiating between Design Models and Process Models:

Everyone in a training organization wants their training to be more effective! A step towards reaching that goal is for your team to use design models that best fit the type of training your team is responsible for creating.

The phrase “design model” does not mean ADDIE, even though it is often referred to as a design model, it is actually a process model. People may use the terminology interchangeably, but the models are, in fact, very different.

Design models add value to the training team because they provide a structure for learning based on tested cognitive science. They also provide cohesiveness among team members, because they facilitate collaboration between designers and/or developers.

This session will provide participants with an understanding of the differences between a process model, such as ADDIE, and a design model, such as First Principles, the 4-Mat Cycle, or the Star Legacy Model, to name a few. You’ll learn what it is that makes these three design models unique, the philosophy behind each model, as well as steps on how to apply these models using authoring tools such as Camtasia, Articulate Studio and Storyline.

In this session, you will learn:
    · To differentiate between a process model and a design model
    · To differentiate between several design models
    · To select the most effective design model for each project
    · The benefits of using a design model
    · How to apply design models to e-Learning modules

The Business Model Innovation Factory: How to Stay Relevant When the World is Changing
    Author: Saul Kaplan

Business models just don't last as long as they used to last. Historically, CEOs have managed a single business model over their entire careers. Today, all organizations must be capable of designing, prototyping, and experimenting with new business models.

The author will show you how to create a pipeline of new business models in the face of disruptive markets and competition.

Kaplan is the founder and chief catalyst of the Business Innovation Factory, or BIF, a real-world laboratory for exploring and testing new business models and social systems. BIF has attracted a global community of more than 5,000 innovators and organizes the BIF Collaborative Innovation Summit.

This book will help you make your organization a business model innovator and stay competitive in today's turbulent world.

NOTE: Register by July 15 to reserve a lunch.

Credit card users MUST pay in advance. If you are paying at the event, we can only take cash or check.

    Program Description:

Here's a common issue faced by most organizations: learning happens beyond the LMS and formal environments often available. Additionally, new demands and opportunities for mobile learning are often met with uncertainties for integration to a broader strategy.

But the Experience API (xAPI), or Tin Can API, is an emerging standard that promises to evolve the learning technology marketplace. In short, this is the next generation of SCORM and it's poised to change the paradigm of enterprise learning.

    Attend this session and learn:

    • What is Experience API?
    • Why do we need something new to replace SCORM?
    • What does xAPI mean for learning products and technologies?
    • What business problems can xAPI solve?
    • How do I keep up with current information on this critical new technology?

Workshop to follow: "Planning & Designing for Experience API (Tin Can API) and its Affordances"

This luncheon will be followed by a 3-hour interactive workshop that will give you a deeper dive into this topic.

Registration for the luncheon and the workshop are separate. Click HERE to learn more about the workshop.

Emerging Learning Technologies: Planning & Designing for the Experience API (Tin Can API)

    Program Description:

The Experience API (xAPI), or Tin Can API, is an emerging standard that promises to evolve the learning technology marketplace. In short, this is the next generation of SCORM and it's poised to change the paradigm of enterprise learning.

The xAPI allows the capture of streams of learning activities and experiences, both online and offline -- and has major implications to capture and improve formal, informal and experiential learning in organizations. Market opportunities and emerging products are quickly evolving out of the affordances of the effort.

This 3-hour workshop will give participants the basics to understanding this cutting-edge technology, it's impact on training and development, and how to apply it strategically in the workplace and training environment. All participants will receive useful materials to take back to the workplace.

    Attend this session and learn:
    • An understanding of what Experience API is
    • What xAPI will enable compared to SCORM
    • How training value can be measured for mobile and eLearning activities
    • How data is collected across multiple technologies into a single-user learning session
    • How learning paths can be created to measure behavior change
    • How mobile technologies can enhance learning interventions

    Target audience:

    • Training managers
    • Instructional designers
    • Developers
    • Project managers
    • C-level executives in L&D

    Recent feedback on this workshop:

"This workshop was great! While I had a basic conceptual understanding of Tin Can API / Experience API before I attended, Mike and Neil provided concrete examples and use cases, which helped me learn how I can help my clients incorporate this emerging technology...."

    UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging.
    Author: Scott Stratten

If you're like most people, you don't enjoy having your dinner interrupted by a cold call from a telemarketer. You probably don't bother to read the "junk mail that clutters your mailbox or the "spam" that makes your email inbox overflow. And it's a safe bet that you don't listen carefully to the commercials that interrupt your favorite television show. If these experiences are "marketing," then you - and your customers - probably prefer whatever's the complete opposite.

So instead of trying these same tired methods to build brand and loyalty, what if you could have a new kind of conversation with your customers and prospects? If you're ready to stop marketing and start engaging, then welcome to UnMarketing.

Straten provides you with innovative ways to get out of the old "Push and Pray" marketing rut, which assumes that messages sent out blindly and broadly will magically lead to loyal, long-term customers. With his "Pull and Stay" approach, you'll learn to bring the right customers to you through listening and engagement, enabling you to build trust and position yourself as their logical choice when they need you.

Stratten is the president of UnMarketing.com. His clients' viral marketing videos have been viewed more than 60 million times and have generated major returns. He speaks and consults globally on how businesses can engage their current and potential customer base using social media.

This book will give you a winning approach to stop ineffective marketing and put relationships first, so that you can reap the long-term, high-quality growth that follows.

The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves
    Author: Matt Ridley

Life is getting better, and it is getting better at an accelerating rate. All across the globe, food availability, income, and life span are up. Disease, child mortality, and violence are down.

Although the world is far from perfect, necessities and luxuries alike are getting cheaper. Population growth is slowing. The Internet, the mobile phone, and genetics are enriching people's lives like never before. The pessimists who dominate public discourse insist that we will soon reach a turning point and things will start to get worse. But they have been saying that for 200 years.

Matt Ridley sets the record straight so you can understand why things are truly getting better, and why they will continue to get better. He is the author of Genome and other books on evolution, genetics, and society that have sold more than 800,000 copies, been translated into 27 languages, and won several awards.

This book will arm you with the facts that will help you to avoid the pessimism all around you so that you can anticipate - and participate in - the prosperity of the 21st century.
